   KATYA RICHARDSON is a composer, pianist, and vocalist with an international presence. As perfectly described by the Wales Arts Review, her sound “exists in a balance between organic orchestral music and electronica,” being best known for her innovative vocal textures and lush harmonies. Hailing from a jazz background, she is naturally drawn to collaboration and intrigued by the limits of genre - whether it be manifested through her works for orchestra, film, modern dance, or pop.

    As a film composer, Katya has had the privilege of working with a number of A-list artists. Most notably, she operated as a studio assistant for Danny Elfman on The Grinch (2018) and Dolittle (2020), creating custom virtual instruments and arranging songs for Tyler the Creator. She has also worked with TV composer Craig Wedren on Fresh Off the Boat; at Hans Zimmer’s Remote Control Productions; and engraved music for jazz trumpet player, Jon Faddis, and the Dizzy Gillespie Band's performance at the "Ella and Dizzy" concert at the Hollywood Bowl.

   Originally trained as a concert composer and orchestrator, Katya has written for a variety of ensembles including Ensemble Dal Niente and award-winning Calder Quartet. As an At the young age of 15, the Los Angeles Philharmonic performed her orchestral work, Undefined, marking her second premiere at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. In 2016, her Fanfare for Orchestra premiered at the Hollywood Bowl 2016 Opening Night Steely Dan concert, a piece which Billboard deemed an “impressive composition.”

   As a vocalist, Katya explores loop effects with a folky, raw cinematic tone - her contributions as a soloist can be heard on John Debney’s horror score to Lake of Death (2019) and the voice of Mt. Everest in Renan Ozturk’s documentary for National Geographic. Katya also produces and sings for the synth-pop duo, LightHouse, which was described by Flaunt Magazine as “a seemingly flawless combination of various synthetics that not only pleases the ears but causes listeners to get up and dance.”

   From orchestral premieres at the Musikverein in Vienna to the Rudolfinum in Prague, Katya’s compositions resonate internationally. She has collaborated with choreographers such as Bill T. Jones and dancers from the Norwegian National Ballet, Ballet Cymru, USC Kaufman School of Dance, and The Royal Ballet in London - complete with performances at the Royal Opera House and Sadler’s Wells. Her newest EP for dance, Left From Write, is a musical feat: a soulful, groove-driven portrait of dyslexia and highlights an impressive cross-collaboration between choreographer, animator, composer, and lighting designer.

Left From Write will be revived for additional performances at the Oslo Opera House in 2020.

   Katya recently graduated with a B.M. in Composition and minor in Cinematic Arts from the University of Southern California with a prestigious Trustee Scholarship, studying with Pulitzer-Prize finalist Ted Hearne, orchestrator Frank Ticheli, and BAFTA-winning game composer Garry Schyman. As a pianist, Katya has performed for GLEE star Matthew Morrison and placed first in various regional and international festivals. Katya is currently working on her first feature film and finished two new collaborations - a commercial for designer Susan Alexandra and an experimental film with KO Productions (UK) and choreographer Charlotte Edmonds.

 

   She enjoys tom kha soup, paddle-boarding, and currently resides in Los Angeles.
